Christmas Fare A wonderful Christmas-time

Christmas is coming and it pays to be ahead of the game when it comes to preparations for puddings at the festive dinner table. We celebrate traditional table fare…

Christmas pudding It is fair to say that people either love or loathe Christmas (or plum) pudding but it is the traditional end to British festive lunch. Rich and gooey, it blends dried fruit, treacle,

suet and spices and served with a sprig of holly poking from its dome. It is then doused in cognac, set on fire and

served at the table, accompanied by brandy buter, cream or custard. Thought to have its origins in medieval

England, it has sometimes been referred to as “figgy pudding” when the dish’s filling consisted mainly of figs. Te problem with pudding is that by the time

it arrives on the table, most diners at it are too full to properly enjoy it. Tankfully due to a fairly high alcohol content,

the pud can last well into the New Year and beyond when its true value can be treasured. Making the mix for a Christmas pud is

sometimes a ritual prepared on “Stir Up Sunday”, the last before Advent. But it is slowly fading from family life. But if you can’t be bothered, the

supermarkets stock puddings as good as you’ll get anywhere. Check out Aldi and Lidl for bargains but you can put your house on Sainsbury or M&S delivering just what you need.
