Welcome O
ne of the interesting things to note about the long, long hot summer
we have just enjoyed (or endured, depending on your point of view) was that when the rain did finally come, how quickly the earth responded. Leave aside a brief, soggy morning in
mid-July which did not seem to make a button of difference to the yellowed lawns,
scorched vegetable plots and wilting plants in borders and pots. When it did finally start to rain – it did so when we were in Greece - the ground sprang to life once more. We leſt Britain with barely any greenery in the lawn and returned to a savannah, eight inches high and lusher than it has been for many years. Rather than obsess about the weather continually, we perhaps just
witnessed the British climate in all its variety. Mind you, it seems the BBC blames every weather “event” (wind, rain, snow, hail and heat) on global warming. Perhaps the most hilarious press release we received was that the hot weather had caused “bumpy” rail journeys, according to Network Rail. Tat’s a full circle. Once it was leaves on the line, then the “wrong” kind of snow and now the “wrong” kind of heat caused issues with the clay on which the rails are laid. Not a bad time to peruse the latest advice from the expert gardeners at Hadlow College who offer some advice this autumn. Te message seems to be: take stock, roll your sleeves up.... and get planting. Dawn Kingsford marks the 50th anniversary of the Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty (AONB) designation and what it has to offer. I returned to my old stomping ground of Folkestone to learn about
Kent’s role in World War One, ahead of this November’s centenary of the 1918 armistice. There are enough tours and walks around the county to keep you going until November 2019! As ever, we bring you the best our panto season has to offer in
this neck of the woods (not least Aladdin, starring the incomparable Richard Blackwood, at the Hazlitt Theatre). Needless to say there is much, much more. As ever, thank you for reading. All the best,
Simon Finlay, Editor Simon
