“Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.” – Psalm 82:3
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; And what doth the LORD re- quire of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
– Micah 6:8
SEVERE POVERTY DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE: IT AFFLICTS CHILDREN ON EVERY CONTINENT AND FROM EACH CULTURE. That includes children in the Balkan states of Romania and Moldova. And the children who seem to struggle hardest are the Roma (gypsy) children of Romania and orphans at state-homes within Moldova.
Children in the after-school program
To this day, Gypsy communities in Romania continue to suffer under prejudice and persecution from people living around them. It’s been like this for generations. Roma children grow up feeling like complete outsiders in their society, living in dire poverty, and lacking any expectation for a better future. Some Roma children only speak Hungarian, making it impossible for them to communicate and learn in a country that speaks Romanian.
