Arts Education

Arts Education is a core element of the curriculum offer at Matravers. We believe that participation in high quality arts education contributes to the development of our core values and also provides students with transferable skills that they can use across the curriculum that will be of tremendous benefit to them in later life. Our team of specialist teachers provide excellence in dance, drama, music, art and design throughout Key Stage 3 and as popular options in Key Stage 4 and in the Sixth Form.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of extra-curricular opportunities in the expressive and performing arts. The annual production is a real highlight of the school calendar and these have recently included outstanding performances of ‘Oliver’, ‘Fame’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Other recent highlights in the arts include partnership projects with national companies including the dance department participating in a project facilitated by Rambert Dance Company and the drama department’s involvement in a project facilitated by the National Theatre. We also encourage students to watch and view professional work live when possible and facilitate this by organising a number of theatre and gallery visits during the academic year within all of the arts disciplines.

The expressive and performing arts departments are a vibrant hub of high-quality learning throughout the school day through excellent specialist teaching, and beyond through the provision of rich and wide-ranging extra-curricular opportunities. Dance companies, drama clubs and musical ensembles can often be found rehearsing outside of lesson time and large numbers of students benefit hugely from these opportunities. Particular highlights of our extra-curricular provision include the Matravers Choir who perform extensively to great acclaim in the local and wider area and ‘endurance’, the Matravers boys’ dance company who perform across the region and have become a real flagship of the school and the performing arts departments. Students regularly showcase their skills in departmental shows and concerts in addition to the range of larger scale performance opportunities on offer.
