Robin Dutt gives his view on which legends of the big screen look good in a suit
THE SUIT IS , CAN OR SHOULD be the most vital thing in the male wardrobe. It is literally a civilian suit of armour for a day’s campaign or a sleek ensemble to partner the night. Its simplicity can often be beguiling, informative, levelling or elevating and nowhere is this better demonstrated than the panoply of films - classic and new - which celebrate the suit. While, of course, it is the stars who stepped into immortality, what they wore was often the reason - the perfect pairing of skill in acting and how the suit informed their very presence. Everyone has a favourite suit story - something treasured, something much missed or grown out of, a grandfather’s hand-me-down, your first bespoke example - the list goes on. Here’s mine. I recall giving a lecture in London a few days after a strange email had been circulated advising female lecturers to wear “modest modes” (whatever those are) and gentlemen lecturers to be clean shaven (unless sporting a full beard) and a suit. Taking the silent voice of command seriously I wore, the very next day, a black PVC two-piece and squeaked around the campus. It was the same outfit I wore to welcome one Bryan Ferry on stage for jeweller Stephen Webster and yet the same I sported to attend a dominatrix’s funeral where I gave the eulogy. Suits? They are nothing if not adaptable...
