SECRET’S OUT ...

How Dege & Skinner played a modest role in the Wedding of the Year. By Daniel Evans

F YOU WORK ON SAVILE ROW THEN YOU’D better be able to keep a secret, as I found out back in February when I settled down to interview William Skinner, managing director of Dege & Skinner, one of the most famous houses on the Row and renowned for its military tailoring.

First of all I asked William about their royal and military

credentials. “We still go down to Sandhurst to make the uniforms for the young officer cadets before they join their regiment,” he said. “We have a Royal Warrant to the Queen and have made uniforms for various members of the Royal Family. And we made William and Harry’s uniforms when they first went into the army and their first official portrait that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery is of them in Dege & Skinner uniforms. When we saw them at Sandhurst we dealt with them like we would any other cadet. They just happened to be Prince William and Prince Harry. We made the uniforms and have made other items for them as they have gone through their military careers. They are a pleasure to deal with.” As Prince Harry and Meghan had recently announced their engagement, I moved onto the killer question – So, William, are Dege & Skinner involved at all in the upcoming Royal wedding? “I don’t know” was all your master inquisitor managed to get out of Dege & Skinner’s MD. At the time this was the honest answer as it wasn’t until March that D&S were asked if they would like to be involved in the wedding. The interview moved on – you can check it out in our last issue or online if you missed it – and that was that. Fast-forward to Saturday, May 19 and, along with a global TV

audience reported to be a little above two billion, I sat down to watch the Wedding of the Year, which turned out to be a truly impressive and inclusive event.
