A company with a mission “to ensure people have healthier lives and happier homes” sounds like a good place to work. And investors have good reason to back Reckitt Benckiser, the Slough-based group whose products include household names such as Dettol, Scholl, Veet, Clearasil and Harpic.

The company says it strives to find effective and convenient solutions that make a difference to people all over the world. “The world faces complex challenges, just talking about responsibility is not enough,” says Reckitt. “Growth and responsibility go hand in hand, so we’re taking action. We’re working towards our 2020 goals to make sure we’re making the right kind of impact.”

Half-yearly figures of increased net revenues by 23% to over £6 billion and operating profit up 22% to £1.4b helped the share price to rise 9% in July.

Another big gain was by SDL (up 18%), the Maidenhead software and professional services company.

But as usual, the best share performance was among the smallest quoted companies, the prize going this time to Pipehawk (up 68%), the Aldershot- based electronic systems development company developing solutions in the specialist fields of land mines and utilities detection.
