Manufacturers shine across the south

Manufacturers across the south contribute significantly to the UK economy – and the Southern Manufacturing 100 is a snapshot of the breadth of enterprise in the region.

Compiled by The Business Magazine, and sponsored by Lloyds Bank, advisory firm MHA MacIntyre Hudson, global insurance broker JLT and technology solutions provider Taylor Made Computer Solutions, the listing shines a spotlight on the sector’s success stories.

The South East is the largest regional manufacturing economy in the UK – ahead of the Midlands and North – and accounts for more manufacturing exports than any other part of the country.

According to figures from EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, the region employs nearly half a million skilled people in the sector. Productivity levels in manufacturing in the region are also higher than the national average.

In addition, a growing number of South East exporters expect their ability to compete in international markets to improve over the next year, according to the latest Business in Britain report from Lloyds Bank.

62% of exporters in the region expect their ability to compete in international markets to improve in the next 12 months, 12 points higher than six months ago.

46% said they had seen their overseas sales grow over the past six months, compared with just 22% who said they had fallen.

38% of exporters said sales to Europe had grown during the same period. 34% said they had grown trade with the USA and 22% had increased sales to China.

And despite facing continued uncertainty, 46% expect their overseas sales to increase over the next six months, compared with just 18% that expected international sales to fall.

The good news comes as the latest data from ONS revealed the value of British exports hit a record £621 billion in the 12 months to June 2018, with service exports rising 2.2% to an all-time high of £278b and exports of goods climbing 6.3% to £343b.

SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING

100

• Top of the Manufacturing 100 list this year is McLaren Group, manufacturers of racing and road cars. Headquartered at Woking, McLaren recently announced a major production boost – and is committed to ensuring that its sportscar and supercar range will be hybrid within seven years.

• At number five is Stannah, which has just celebrated its 150th year in business as manufacturer and supplier of lifting products. The Andover company operates in 40 countries worldwide and employs almost 2,000 people.

• At number 11 is Kaicer, only formed last year by CEO Mark Davey after purchasing his former company Lakesmere UK and transferring more than 100 Lakesmere staff to his new company.

• At number 13 is Hall & Woodhouse, which brews under the name Badger Brewery and operates more than 250 pubs in the south. The independent family company has been run by seven generations of the Woodhouse family.

• And at number 16 is Owen Mumford, the global industry leader in medical design and manufacture, which has just opened a new facility in Malaysia to handle expanding sales in Asia.

Star performers stand out throughout the list. And this year The Business Magazine and our list sponsors are launching a new Southern Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year Award.

Southern Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year Award

The award acknowledges and celebrates the exceptional contribution of an apprentice in their workplace. To be eligible for this award, applicants were either currently undertaking an apprenticeship or had completed it within the past 12 months (since March 2017).

The award is open to all engineering and manufacturing companies in the Thames Valley and Solent & South Central region and nominations have been submitted by either apprentices or their employers.

The award will be presented on October 31 at a special lunch at the Manufacturing Technology Centre, Coventry.
