Wiltshire Cricket

Creating Primary School Coaches

To maximize a players potential, it is important to spot talent at as early a stage as possible. Therefore teachers can hold a major role in getting future athletes ready for a lifetime in sport. However with the sport of cricket, there is always some apprehension on behalf of teachers to give feedback on player’s performance, as they may have a limited knowledge of the sport and the skills involved to play it.

Over the last few years, Wiltshire Cricket (in co-ordination with “Chance to Shine”) has successfully run “Cricket for Teachers” courses to decrease this feeling of anxiety. These teacher training sessions create an environment in which teachers can experience activities and games to help them spot talented young cricketers.

Since 2009, Wiltshire Cricket have “trained up” over 250 teachers to be able to set up simple batting, bowling

and fielding games. The aim is not to produce teachers who are qualified coaches, but more to give teachers information to improve their own confidence in setting up lessons. That way the children can have the opportunity to show the teacher what they can do.

Wiltshire Cricket will be beginning to deliver “Cricket for Teachers” course in the New Year. If there are any schools who would like to act as host venues for any of these courses, Wiltshire Cricket would be more than happy to hear from you.

Steps Forward for the Girl’s game

Girl’s cricket is continuing to thrive across Wiltshire at school, club and county levels.

The “Chance to Shine” programme delivered in primary schools across the county is creating both coaching and match play opportunities for girls of all levels of ability.

The six week mini project delivered during September and October saw 48 schools participating in three weeks of coaching sessions designed to introduce the game to the players. This intensive, but fun programme, was followed by a series of eight mini indoor festivals, so the girls were able to put into effect the skills that they had practiced during lessons.

The festivals hosted at venues in Swindon, Chippenham, Melksham and Salisbury gave the players the opportunity to test themselves against players of a similar ability and level of experience. The overall aim of the competition was to have fun and enjoy the girls’ first experience of cricket. However, the competition also allowed us to talent spot players for potential higher level programmes.

During the October half term, Wiltshire Cricket ran a trial for the Under 11’s winter coaching programmes being held in the North and South of the county. Over 70 girls were nominated by clubs, schools and “Chance to Shine” coaches of which 48 girls actually attended the trial. To evidence the success of the primary school programme, 60% of the girls who were selected are not members of organised cricket clubs. There is clearly a lot more talent out there yet to be uncovered.

Wiltshire and Swindon Sport, your County Sports Partnership has been given a role in supporting schools to achieve the most from this funding. Working with AfPE and the Youth Sport Trust we will promote the local opportunities to those schools benefiting from the new PE and Sport funding and can provide advice, information and support.
