HARDENHUISH SUCCESS at Wiltshire School Games

On Wednesday 3 July Hardenhuish School competed in the Wiltshire School Games Level 3 competition at Marlborough College.

This is the county/area stage of the multi-sport School Games Festivals. Over 50 schools, 1,000 participants and more than 100 Sports Leaders from across Wiltshire took part in various sports from Tennis, Athletics and Swimming to Rugby, Zonal Basketball and Tri–Golf.

The Games are designed to build on the magic of 2012 to enable every school and child to participate in competitive sport.

Our girls’ rugby 7s team, Year 8 girls‘ tennis team, Year 7 boys’ and girls’ Super 8 athletes all qualified from the previous round, so we were now going up against the best schools in the whole of Wiltshire. We arrived at the incredible Marlborough College Campus to a scene of excitement. There were primary schools, secondary schools, Great Britain athletes and the Mayor of Marlborough all in attendance.

The day started with a motivational speech from the School Games Organiser, then we were treated to some dances on the outdoor stage, which made for a great festival atmosphere.

Swindon Games 27 June 2014

All the pupils received a free School Games T-shirt and goody bag.

Not only were all the sports competitions being played, pupils could also have a go at a variety of fun challenges including the Mo Farah Challenge which involved 250 of the fastest athletes attempting to run 20m sprints each to see if they could collectively beat Mo’s time over 5,000m of 13:41:66. There was a great atmosphere in the athletes village and they all did a fantastic job contributing to the overall winning time of 12:58:26!

Our teams all did really well; the tennis team came 3rd and the Super 8 athletes (pictured above) finished 6th and 7th. The great success of

Girls Rugby 7’s winners

the day was the girls’ touch rugby 7s team. We played three schools in the morning. In the first match we drew 0-0 against Trafalgar School, then went on to beat St Edmund’s and St Laurence Schools 1-0.

Y7 super 8’s athletics

As winners of our pool, we went on to play in the final against Lavington School. It was a very tense match, which resulted in a 0-0 draw, so we had to go into extra time, which was ‘Golden Goal.’

The rules were that we started with 6 players, then every minute a player had to leave the pitch and whoever scored first won. The girls all worked really hard to create scoring opportunities and finally Katherine Pennycott made a break and scored for Hardenhuish. The girls (pictured above) all received Gold medals from England women’s Fly Half, Ceri Large, and the School Games Trophy.

The girls’ rugby team has now qualified to represent Hardenhuish and Wiltshire

at the Level 4 Sainsbury’s School Games finals. This is a national multi-sport event where the most talented young people in the UK will compete in sporting venues around the country (including the Olympic Park). Best of luck to the Girls rugby team!

The PE staff would like to congratulate all the athletes that took part in the Wiltshire School Games for representing the school so brilliantly and for their individual and team performances. It was a fantastic occasion enjoyed by all.
