Sportivate Project Sportivate is a £56 million Lottery funded London 2012 legacy project that gives more young people the chance to discover a sport that they love.

Sportivate Case Study Trowbridge Archers

The programme gives 11-25 year-olds who are not particularly sporty access to 6 weeks’ of free or subsidised coaching in a range of sports. There’s a wide range of activities on offer including judo, golf, tennis, wakeboarding, athletics, and parkour/free

running.

During the 6 weeks those taking part can work towards an event or personal challenge and when the free or low- cost coaching has finished they will be supported to continue playing sport.

Sportivate launched in June 2011 as a four-year programme aimed at

14-25 year-olds but, due to its success, additional funding of £10m per year has been invested allowing the programme to run until March 2017.

From September 2013, Sportivate is extending its age group so that 11-13 year-olds can also take part. Sportivate is inclusive and targets a variety of young people including those who have a disability and people from black and minority ethnic groups.

Sports Governing Bodies, private coaching providers, Schools/Colleges and Clubs can apply to WASP for funding for Sportivate projects. This can cover the costs such as coaching, facilities, equipment and marketing.

About the Satellite Club Project

Many young people stop playing sport when they leave school but Satellite Clubs aims to prevent this by making the transition from school group to community club easier.

Sport England is working in partnership with national governing bodies of sport (NGBs) and county sport partnerships (CSPs) by investing over £49 million of Lottery funding into the development of Satellite Clubs.

Satellite Clubs or outposts of existing community sports clubs, many of which are based on school or college sites, will help us get more people playing sport. They will also ensure more young people are able to

continue to take part in sport as they transition from school to community sport. We will offer every secondary school in England the opportunity to host a Satellite Club with the aim of creating 4,000 new Satellite Clubs by 2017.

What is a Satellite Club?

At the heart of every Satellite Club is an established community sports club (hub club) that will be working with their NGB who, with the support of their county sport partnership will establish an extension of its club in a host school or college. At the heart of every Satellite Club are the young people who

take part and we are focused on the development of those young people through sport and community club activity.

The diagram below outlines a typical Satellite Clubs model.

On the 11th March 2013 an Archery Club was formed in Trowbridge after demand for a local archery club was identified during open sport days organised by Active Trowbridge. Archery leader Rik Grover delivered taster sessions which gave participants an opportunity to try archery and experience what the sport had to offer. Due to the high interest in Archery, Rik and Hayley Bell (Active Trowbridge Leisure Activities Manager) discussed how best to take this forward and met with Gloria Mead from Archery GB to discuss plans to develop a Trowbridge based club. In partnership with WASP a successful Sportivate application was developed that would help finance a local club and provide opportunities for 11+ participants to participate in Archery on a weekly basis. The project was approved as it demonstrated evidence of demand, was supported by the relevant NGB and also the club was a clear exit route for participants. This was important as not only did it meet the Sportivate criteria but it had the potential to be much more than a short term intervention, as participants could continue at the club after the initial Sportivate project ended.

Trowbridge Archers takes place at John of Gaunt School on Monday evenings from 5:30 – 7:30pm and now has over 40 members. Weekly sessions are fully structured and suitable for participants aged 11+. The Archers learn about etiquette and health and safety aspects of the sport along with practicing different ranges of shooting and participating in competitive practices. The formation of Trowbridge Archers has been a great demonstration of partnership work with Active Trowbridge, WASP and Archery GB all involved in helping develop the club. Rik Grover suggested that interest in archery increased during London 2012, with many spectators wanting to have a go. The formation of the Trowbridge Archers has serviced this need and allowed the momentum from London 2012 to live on locally.
