NATIONAL SCHOOLS Badminton Championships
Young Volunteers Day
On the 16th October students from Stonehenge, Wellington Academy and Avon Valley College attended the Young Ambassador Day.
The National Schools Badminton Championships, sponsored by Centre Parcs and adidas, provide one of the few team based knock out competitions that encompass the whole country. It has now become of the biggest events of its kind in Europe. A staggering 6140 teams entered last year and with free entry this year that figure is expected to rise. It allows KS3 and KS4 girls and boys to take part in separate categories. Teams are made up of four players with an optional reserve and many long lasting friendships have been struck up as a result.

Having been involved since the outset 8 years ago I know how much this means to those involved. Some players look forward to the competition all year thereby promoting more interest in after school clubs. Young Officials are given the chance to demonstrate the theory they have learned and can play a major role in running the events. Some of the larger events, such as the West Wilts first round held at Centre Parcs at Longleat have become establish ‘must do’ diary dates with teachers as these firm favourites demonstrates what is good about sport. For example in West Wilts alone, this year all 8 local schools have entered submitting on light backgrounds

43 teams, over 200 players, 30 plus young officials playing 370 games in 7 hours of badminton on 8 courts. It’s going to be hard fought fun and probably one of the biggest of its kind in the country.
This year the County Sports Partnership has encompassed the competition into the School Games. Once all the first round events are complete the second round takes place in early February 2014. This second round is the County Final and the main event of the badminton element of School Games providing even more incentive and excitement. Win that and it’s on to Regional Finals which for the SW is held at Exeter University which is a real attraction for the players. Finally it all concludes in April at Centre Parcs in Nottingham when the best school teams from each region battle it out for the prestigious title of National School Champions. Is it any wonder why it is rapidly becoming popular with children and a huge boost to an established sport where everyone from the NGB through to clubs and schools are winners with this formula.

The day was aimed to improve the students knowledge of leadership and the different roles that they can undertake. The day started with the students teaching each other warm up games, then creating a fundamental circuit, followed by teaching each other different activities like cheerleading and skipping. With all these new ideas the students then created their own games and taught them to the rest of the group. After lunch was a theory session focusing on the qualities needed to be a sports leader and for the students to start thinking what difference they are going to make back at School. If you want to learn more about becoming a Young Volunteer Leader please contact your School Games Organiser.
