The Summer May Be Coming To An End, But The Risks Remain

For many venues and nightclubs in the UK, summer 2018 will be remembered as a positive one. World cup fever was joined by soaring temperatures and a feel good atmosphere.

The bars were packed, particularly those with outside areas available.

Apart from a little hiccup with the CO2 shortage, venues might be sad to see the back of one of the best summers in recent memories. But as we head into the autumn and winter months, we should all be positive and upbeat about the possibilities.

Let’s not forget that with the dark closing in early, there’s more opportunity to partake in night time leisure. And we’re trembling with anticipation thinking about freshers’ week, Halloween, bonfire night…and, of course the big event in December that we’re refusing to mention.

Even though summer 2018 has almost finished, and the weather has turned a bit miserable, and England were unceremoniously dumped out of the world cup, this year has not finished yet. Things will be different though. Nights will be different. The atmosphere at venues will be different.

And with a different type of night life, there comes different risks.

As a responsible insurance broker, and specialist to the night time leisure industry, we advise all our clients that risk management is an ongoing process. You can’t calculate your risks once and assume that you’re permanently covered. Risks change and you need to adapt.

It happens night to night in night time leisure. No two nights are the same. Different audiences and different nights of the week can produce completely different risks.

It also happens season to season. The summer’s risks involved customers sitting outside and drinking through the day. Whereas the winter months may see people drinking quicker and trying to cram into smaller spaces and rooms.

It would be easy to leave your risk management and hope that the measures you put in place in summer will still be sufficient. But all you’ll achieve is making yourself liable for accident or injury.

For many, September is a fresh start. New school, new university, new season. If you want to be ready for a brand new season, you should make sure that there is no lingering hangover from the last. The summer may have been great, but winter can be even better.

Why not kick start the rest of the year by completing a full risk management check. NDML have 20 years’ experience in the night time leisure insurance sector.
