he Wyoming Orff Chapter hosted the amazing Lynn
Kleiner in August. We enjoyed two days of singing, dancing, playing instruments, and creating. Facing the Music…the Orff Way!
Lynn challenged us to view the Orff approach as discovering ways to challenge the high achievers and raise up the low. Her theme, “Offering Something Unique and Challenging for every Stage of Development,” was a perfect fit as we explored this concept. We often stopped to discuss how to extend activities and help our lower students grow at the same time.

included. Lastly, we played the song on recorders, incorporating the call-and-response sections from the solo singing portion. This allowed a challenging part for the high level players, and an easier part for the lower level players. One song – endless possibilities!
The Orff approach is limitless in the depth of activities it can encompass. The only limitation is our imaginations! One example of an activity that incorporated all aspects of elementary teaching was “Cheki Morena,” a Puerto Rican play song. It took two days, but we learned the Spanish words to the song, and each sang a solo response to the call-and-response portion. A simple dance was

Our Orff chapter workshops are like a family reunion. Wyoming is so wide spread, we don’t see our colleagues from around the state but a few times a year. I asked some of our attendees to share what they took away from the workshop:

Marci Shuck (Cheyenne, WY): “(Lynn’s) reminder that teaching silently from time to time was important to me. It reminded me that using that technique draws the kids’ attention and listening to sharper focus, and saves my voice! I also love the student-led singing (instead of teacher-led) – to allow the class to echo what another student sings, then give good descriptive feedback about what we heard…that makes a lot of sense to me, and again helps with my vocal fatigue.”
