Taking a Stand for Music


On June 28th over 300 delegates, including both Collegiates and state MEA’s leadership, participated in visits to senators and representatives in Washington, DC, for Hill Day 2018. Television interviews highlighted the days events, and #NAfMEHD18 had a social media reach of several million people.


WMEA President Lila Kennah, President Elect Steve Schofield, and Collegiate representatives Michaella Dukart and Nick Hoskins met with Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney and Senators John Barrasso and Mike Enzi on this year’s visit to the hill. NAfME Past President Denese Odegaard and NAfME Public Policy Advocate Tooshar Swain joined them for the meeting with Senator Enzi. Hoskins and Dukart also spent several event-filled days at the 2018 Collegiate Advocacy Summit.


WMEA officers Kennah, Schofield, and Wyoming Executive Director Sandy Steele also participated in the NAfME National Assembly and the Council of Executives and Council of Presidents. Much of the program focused on the future of music education for all students. Breakout sessions included Coalitions, Conversations and Collaboration, Crisis Management, Leadership, Technology, Budgeting, ESSA, Legal Concerns, Innovations in Music Education, and Ethics. Presentations from NAfME leadership, honors presentations, and performances highlighted the five- day event.
