ABSTRACT: Synthetic urines are drug-free products which are made to resemble real urine. They are used by those who wish to escape the consequences of a potentially positive urine drug test. The manufacturers make these products with creatinine concentrations and pH such that they would not be detected as invalid in normal specimen-validity testing. We received two methods to enable specimen collectors to detect synthetic urines: one that could be used at a collection site, and an alternate method using liquid reagents on a semi-automated analyzer.
