AIR INTAKE SYSTEMS

The ‘Beast from the East’ proved no match for Medway Power plant’s air intake system

A condition report from the UK’s Medway Power Station showed that the Veotec trace heated air intake system has been performing very well. Set to automatic and requiring no maintenance, the system effectively prevented snow and ice build-up during sub-zero ‘Siberian temperatures’ which affected the country earlier this year, reports UKPN.

the gas turbine, as well as requiring the engine to undergo increased compressor washes to maintain optimum performance. The first problem involved corrosive,

moisture-laden air coming from the sea. The second was the ocurrence of freezing fog. This caused a a pressure drop across the

existing filter system and moisture carry-over into the system. Veotec designed and manufactured a new

two-stage filter protection system specifically for Medway Power Plant. The main purpose of this was to protect the

system has proved that it can provide an advantage in power loss on the first of the two turbines . Subsequently, a decision was made by

management to install the system on a second turbine within the power plant. www.veotecgroup.com
