4 ASIA-PACIFIC NEWS Survey of Australian marinas T
he Club Marine 2017 Health of the Australian Marina Industry Survey has been released. The survey was first conducted
in 2013 and it now provides extensive trend data over a six-year period. An exceptionally high 44% of Australia’s 320 marinas participated in this latest survey that is carried out by the Recreation Marine Research Centre at Michigan State University for the Marina Industries Association (MIA) based in Sydney. The report’s author, Dr Ed Mahoney,
said: “The 120-page report is one of the most, if not the most, scientific
and practically relevant marina surveys conducted anywhere in the world. Out of the known Australian marinas, 25% completed all three surveys over a six-year period and this provides the rare capacity to compare various performance measures over time”. MIA Chairman Andrew Chapman said the survey has been a key platform in MIA’s long-term strategy to support the sustainable development of the marina industries. Key points from the surveys over the
2012/13-2016/17 period include: steady demand for marina boat storage with national storage occupancy at 85%;
38% of marinas have waiting lists for berth spaces in Summer; 3% increase in supply to approximately 70,000 spaces; supply of 24 mete plus berths grew 17% over this period; marina gross revenues up significantly, increasing 32% to $3.2 million; for the 2016/17 period, capital expenditure was on average $850,000 per marina; average marina payroll has increased 33% over the six-year period; and exceptional growth of 96% over six years in the number of contactors employed at marinas. Club Marine Chief Executive Officer
Simon McLean said Club Marine is proud to support this important
research project. “Club Marine is committed to providing thought leadership to the recreational marine sector. This marina research is a most valuable addition to our understanding of the business of marinas and to the lead role they can play supporting the growth of recreational boating,” he concluded.
Environmental accreditation for Sydney marina
Following a major A$3 million upgrade, Birkenhead Point Marina in Sydney Harbour celebrated both this improvement and environmental accreditation at a recent function attended by over 150 clients, industry and government officials. Recent investment in the marina by the owners, Mirvac, includes the creation of a range of high quality shoreside amenities for berth-holders and tenants. The marina has over 200 berths for vessels ranging from 8-45 metres. It also provides secure storage and user facilities for kayak, canoe and paddle-boarders. A full service fuel station, marina office and kiosk are part of the on-water infrastructure. Marina Manager Phil McGowen, CMM, welcomed the many guests
out that, as well as generating important economic activity within the local community, the marina was a growing recreational and social hub on Sydney Harbour. He also complimented the marina staff for their pro-active environmental management and leadership with environmental education. Angelo Tsirekas, the Mayor of

and officials and thanked Mirvac for the investment in the marina. He also thanked the many long-standing berth-holders and the marina staff for creating a very positive boating community at the marina.
MIA Executive Officer Colin
Bransgrove presented the International Clean Marina certificate and flag to Phil McGowen, along with the certificate for Fish Friendly Marina accreditation. Colin pointed
Canada Bay Council, addressed the gathering and commended the economic benefits of Birkenhead Point Centre, including the marina. He congratulated Phil McGowen on his excellent marina management and noted that the marina’s resident seal may be reducing fish numbers, but its presence was a positive indicator of the priority the marina places on the environment!
