orld-leading architectural practice Chapman Taylor LLP, which

specialises in large-scale mixed- use projects, has reported that construction work at the US$6 billion Global 100 theme park in China is progressing very well, with the mammoth development on course to open in Spring, this year. The company was appointed to undertake the overall master planning at the site, which will be comparable to Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, currently the world’s biggest amusement corporation based on the number

of visitors it attracts. Global 100 will be one of the

world’s largest theme parks by size and one of the world’s most popular attractions by attendee numbers. It is an integrated development combining leisure, retail, hospitality facilities and a 400-hectare residential scheme in Haikou on Hainan Island. The 170-hectare theme park consists of six different villages, each one being influenced by international film-making attractions from China, Europe and America, and has a vital role to play in ensuring that Hainan Island becomes firmly established as China’s

principal tourist destination for both domestic and international tourists.

Master plan Chapman Taylor developed the Global 100 master plan for Changchun Film Group Corporation, as well as providing the concept and architectural designs for the Chinese and English villages. The theme park villages represent the countries of China, The Netherlands, UK, Italy, Spain and Germany/Switzerland, respectively. The concept of the Chinese

Village draws on the architecture of the Loulan Kingdom or

‘ancient desert city’ and features twin towers housing a major entertainment facility at the centre of the design. A waterfront component features a fishing village, an indoor street and the giant ship from the legendary story of ‘Zheng He’s Expedition’. All these elements work together to create an impression of ‘The Great Silk Road’ journey.

Bond and Bean In the UK area, visitors can expect to meet film characters, including James Bond 007, Alice in Wonderland and Mr Bean. The village will also feature such British
