2 ASIA-PACIFIC NEWS Abell Point welcomes Kate Purdie A

ward-winning, 517-berth Abell Point Marina has welcomed Kate Purdie, who has replaced Luke

McCaul as General Manager of the largest marina on the East Coast of Queensland. Accommodating vessels up to 80 m in length, Abell Point Marina has over recent years experienced an A$18million redevelopment to become a major tourist destination in the Whitsundays. Kate brings 20 years of

management experience to the role, having served as Vice- President

Tasteful rebuild of community marina

Proving that you can’t keep a good marina down, the century- old Elizabeth Bay Marina recently opened again in its new incarnation. The marina is located in Elizabeth

Bay, a harbourside suburb of Sydney. The facility and its wood pontoons were in a state of disrepair, leading the New South Wales Government to decide it was time to upgrade and improve the marina’s functionality and amenities. Among the concerns voiced were those of safety due to the deterioration of the berthing facilities. Bellingham Marine Australia worked with the authorities to

develop a layout that would satisfy everyone involved. The new facility only grew to 13 berths, those ranging from 12 to 15 metres. There are also 47 swing moorings surrounding the marina, as well as a four metre wide skirted wave attenuator to protect the site. “We wanted to make sure that the final design would have public approval, as this is a community marina,” said John Spragg, President of Australasia for Bellingham Marine. “It was important that the new design not significantly alter the waterfront or the lifestyle of the surrounding community.”

of several multi-national media corporations. Kate’s strength is her ability to drive international business, which will be of great benefit in fulfilling Abell Point Marina’s recently amended vision to become a leading international marina. Having recently moved to the

Whitsundays, Kate originally fell in love with the islands and the Great Barrier Reef region when studying at Bond University on the Gold Coast in 1995. Speaking about her recent appointment, Kate said, “Abell Point Marina is a paradise within paradise. With impeccable facilities,

a vibrant atmosphere and world- class customer service in a location of unparalleled natural beauty, the marina is primed to attract a growing base of international clientele. I am proud to be joining Australia’s ‘Marina of the Year’ at such an exciting time”. Marina owner Paul Darrouzet

confirmed, “We’re delighted that Kate has made this wonderful transition into the marine industry. Her wealth of international management experience and her global marketing background will be of great value to the Abell

Point team as we transition into further developing our international marina vision. We look forward to introducing Kate to our industry partners over the coming months at key industry events”.

Highest rating for boutique marina

Located in Sydney, Empire Marina Bobbin Head (EMBH) has been awarded Platinum accreditation under the Global Gold Anchor Scheme – the highest possible rating. The marina is the first in Australia to be platinum-accredited and is only one of three in the world accredited at this level so far. The award was presented by Andrew Chapman, Chairman of the Marina Industries Association, to marina directors Darren Vaux and John Lawler at a ceremony at the marina attended by government, industry and marina customers. Empire Marina Bobbin Head is a 200-berth marina in the pristine Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in Northern Sydney. The marina has twice won Australian Marina of the Year and has been inducted into the Australian Marina Hall of Fame. Compared with the two

They consistently deliver the highest level of service to our valued customers and the continuous validation under the Gold Anchor program will impose the discipline on us to keep us at the top of our game and to strive for constant improvement.
