Final stage of Barangaroo on Sydney Harbour


E


arlier this year, the Barangaroo Delivery Authority, which is the New South Wales (NSW)


Government agency responsible for the development of Barangaroo* and management of its public spaces, announced that it had chosen a consortium comprising Grocon, Aqualand and Scentre Group to deliver the final stage of the Barangaroo development – Central Barangaroo. The consortium will design,


develop and deliver the 5.2 hectare precinct, transforming a disused container terminal into a vibrant new destination on Sydney Harbour for the people of NSW. Central Barangaroo will be


the public heart of Barangaroo, linking the natural beauty of Barangaroo Reserve and the bustling commercial district of Barangaroo South. More than 50% of the site will be public space and parkland, most of it adjoining Sydney Harbour. It will feature diverse, mixed-use cultural and civic spaces, restaurants, a retail centre, apartments and office space. Being fully integrated with the

Metro project, which is due to open in 2024, Central Barangaroo will be highly accessible. The station will provide direct access to Barangaroo for travellers along the 66 km route between Rouse Hill and Bankstown via Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD). The area is already well-served by public transport links following the opening of a ferry wharf last year and Wynyard Walk provides a convenient pedestrian link to train services. The Central Barangaroo


consortium is led by Grocon, one of Australia’s leading private development and construction firms, with extensive experience in delivering complex, landmark projects. The residential component within the consortium is to be funded and developed by Sydney-based Aqualand and the retail centre is to be funded and delivered by Scentre Group, owner and operator of Westfield in Australia and New Zealand. The commercial office component is to be developed by Grocon, who will appoint an investor in the coming months. Grocon will lead design

*Barangaroo, the Cammeraygal woman from whom Barangaroo the place takes its name, was a considerable influence in the early days of the European colony. From the Eora language group, she was one of the Cammeraygal clan who lived in and around the North Harbour and Manly. Independent and strong, the first written account of her in 1790 described Barangaroo as being in her early 40s, worldly, wise and freer of spirit than the settlers expected of a woman – at least the English women of the time. She died a year later, shortly after giving birth in hospital, which she had previously considered to be the place of death.
