EDITOR’S COMMENT A

series of reports on Asian boating, giving insights and recommendations on how to develop the leisure boating industry in these emerging markets, was published by the

International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) on 9 July. ICOMIA is committed to helping the development

of the boating industry in Asia and, with the help of its sponsors (AkzoNobel, Boatshed, Camper & Nicholsons Marinas, Correct Craft, Groupe Beneteau, KIBS, Mercury, Simpson Marine and SBIA), it has created reports on Hong Kong, Malaysia, Macau and Singapore as part of the ICOMIA Asia Project. Reports on more Asian countries will follow in due course. For each of the four countries, the reports detail

national statistics, including boat population, marinas and other boating facilities and industry, as well as infrastructure statistics such as boat and yacht manufacturers, boating clubs and mooring facilities, boat and equipment importers and dealers, repair facilities for yachts and employment in the industry. In addition to detailing these statistics, the reports identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and

threats regarding the growth of the industry, including barriers to trade such as taxation and government attitudes. The reports also make recommendations on how to develop a leisure boating-friendly environment in these countries. These valuable insights are now available in the

ICOMIA Asia Project reports and associated excel sheets, which can be purchased by visiting the organisation’s website: www.icomia.com and clicking ‘Library’. *

Following a meeting in London on 15 August, it was decided to combine the South-East Asia & Pacific edition of Marina Industry with its sister title published for Europe and the Middle East. This change will coincide with plans to expand circulation of the magazine into new territories, including the USA, Gulf Coast and Caribbean Sea. In light of this decision, the country profiles that

have been a feature of both marina magazines for the previous two years will be discontinued in favour of a broader geographical approach to the international marina industry.

Front cover: A consortium has been chosen by the Barangaroo Delivery Authority of New South Wales to deliver the final stage of the Barangaroo development, transforming a disused container terminal into a vibrant new destination called Central Barangaroo, more than 50% of which will be public space and parkland, most of it adjoining Sydney Harbour (see page 16).
