Dementia Help Cycle Challenge – Aberystwyth to Aldeburgh

CONGRATULATIONS to Fris- ton’s Peter Berry and his team! Please join us at Friston Village Hall, 7pm on Friday 7th Septem- ber to hear Peter Berry with his wife Teresa talk about his suc- cessful completion of this cycle challenge to raise valuable funds for the small specialist charity, YoungDementia uk. Peter, aged 53, was diagnosed

with early onset of Alzheimer’s three years ago. Since then he has played a talismanic role locally and nationally explaining how much can be achieved by setting goals and remaining active. Throughout this time, his wife Teresa has been a tremendous pil- lar of support. His co-rider was Jan Dodd

from Kent whose husband has also been diagnosed with early

onset. Jan stepped into the breach ‘at the last moment’ and acted as ‘navigator’ over the 354 miles when the other members of the original team had to withdraw. The support team was school

friend, Norman Woodard who drove the car accompanied by Teresa in charge of PR and mar- keting! They all set out from Aberystwyth on Monday 25th June. Peter claims to have ‘hit a mental wall’ whilst passing through Birmingham (don’t we all!) but persevered and reached Suffolk late on June 29th. They had been joined at Hunt-

ingdon by Jon Bray of Sax Velo, Saxmundham, one of the spon- sors and technical adviser, and later by members of the Sax- mundham Cycling Group. This enabled them all to cycle

from Stowmarket on Saturday 30th June for a celebratory ‘pit- stop’ at The Old Chequers in Fris- ton to be greeted by family and friends from the village. A very happy way of celebrating their success. They were joined by a group of ‘penny-farthing’ cyclists (The League of Ordinary Riders) who then accompanied them to Alde- burgh who ‘did them proud’ and were greeted by the Mayor, John Digby and an enthusiastic crowd of supporters and well-wishers. Glasses of Prosecco were kindly donated by the East of England Co-Op and then a very quick dip in the sea. It is heartening that Peter received so much support, both financial and in kind, from so many local businesses: - Sax Velo, Christies Care, George Farnham Gallery, Fishers Hard- ware, Jeffery & Associates, all of Saxmundham; Munchy Seeds of Leiston, the East of England Co-Op and Foxearth Lodge Nursing Home. A huge thank you to them all and the very many pri- vate donors. There is still plenty of time to

Leiston’s Big Weekend

LEISTON’S Big Weekend June 9th/10th was a resounding suc- cess, thanks to great support from the local community, organisations, musicians and the wonderful weather. Residents, businesses and

organisations from Leiston and the surrounding area, came together at Victory Road Park to enjoy a fun packed weekend based around the theme of ‘Through the Decades’. There was a relaxed and happy atmo- sphere, with everyone enjoying the Fun Fair, live music, and a

good variety of food and drink. On Sunday, the number of stall holders, surpassed all expecta- tions and with 1940’s Dancing, Punch and Judy, Stocks Fair, Boules, Soap Box Racing and Tug of War plus lots more - there

was plenty for all ages to enjoy. The Leiston Events Group wish to thank all those who contrib- uted to the event and look for- ward to seeing you all again at Leiston Celebrates Christmas December 8th/9th 2018.
