Q: What health concerns do you

have facing our children? Horn: The biggest issues in the school

that I face are diabetes, epilepsy, and food allergies. I would say a lack of basic healthy habits is a concern as well.

Q: If parents have a child with a

specific health problem, like diabe- tes, what do you recommend parents do to alert the school? Braunagel: Parents should connect with the school nurse and then meet with the kitchen manager where any food modifications should be made per the doctor’s request. It helps when the kitchen and parent work together to make it possible for the student to be able to enjoy their meal. It is very impor- tant for the school to be made aware of any allergies or food modifications, yearly.

Q: What about exercise. Is there

recommended amount per day for specific ages? Horn: Exercise is just as important as eating healthy, staying hydrated, and getting rest. The recommendation for ages 6-17, is 60 minutes of exercise a day. It should be a variety of different activ- ities, for example, aerobic, muscle, and

bone strengthening would be three dif- ferent types.

Q: Do you have anything else you’d

like to add about helping kids im- prove their health? Horn: Start healthy habits in summer and get in good practice for the school

year. They say when you do something for 28 days, it becomes a habit. Be en- couraging to your children about school, and focus on the positives because a healthy mind is just as important as a health body. Stay active over summer, go on hikes, picnics. State parks are great places to visit.
