Shortly after that, Larry attended a seminar hosted by BRMC STEMI Coor- dinator Kim Foxworthy, who discussed ways to recognize and survive a heart at- tack. Larry had some of the symptoms, but he wasn’t having the tale-tell sign of pain in the arm, so he ruled out heart is- sues.
“I am glad to be sitting here today,”
Larry said. ST-Elevation Myocardia Infarction, or STEMI, is a very serious type of heart attack during which one of the heart’s major arteries (one of the arteries that supplies oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart muscle) is blocked. ST-seg- ment elevation is an abnormality de- tected on an electrocardiogram, or EKG. Following a routine hospital meeting
with Dr. Michael Camp, a cardiologist with Cardiovascular Associates of North Central Arkansas, P.A., Larry mentioned to Dr. Camp the odd sensation he was having in his chest. Camp scheduled Larry for a diagnos-
tic cardiac catheterization at BRMC’s cath lab. During such a procedure, the
Dr. Mike Camp (right) and Barney Larry discuss the diagnostic cardiac catheterization at BRMC’s cath lab that led to Camp discovering, and treating, a 95 percent blockage of Larry’s coronary artery. KEVIN PIEPER FOR LIVING WELL
