While calcium is good for bones, it’s not something that belongs in the heart. If calcium builds up, it causes blockages in the arteries and prevents oxygen from flowing; if calcium deposits break loose, it can cause a blood clot, which can cause a heart attack. Approximately 150 people signed up

for calcium screening following the health fair. Of the first eight participants that

had the screening, four were found to have heart issues. BMRC plans to open up these $99 screenings to the public during the

months of July and August. “For $99, you get the rest of your life,”

Foxworthy said. Along with the calcium screening,

other tests and labs are performed, in- cluding a risk evaluation, body mass in- dex, blood pressure check and an elec- trocardiography, or EKG. An EKG can catch blockages, past un- diagnosed issues, damage and mur- murs.

Separately, these tests cost thou- sands of dollars when run through in- surance.

Quoting the American Heart Associa-

tion, Foxworthy says there’s a 90-min- ute window from the time a patient starts to experience chest pains in which they can maximize their survival of a heart attack.

“Within 20 minutes of having symp-

toms, if you can get to us, we can help you,” Foxworthy said. “Don’t wait if you have chest pain, the clock is ticking.” She said when a patient comes in

through the emergency department, the goal is to get them in the cath lab within

60 minutes. And for patients like Larry, who have a higher-percentage blockage, Foxworthy said it’s important to get the heart open ASAP or heart tissue will be- gin to die. “Don’t put it off, if you sense a change

in yourself. There are things that happen to your body,” Larry said. “I’d rather be a live statistic, rather than not be at all. Don’t wait until it passes, do it right now.
