CIRCUIT & DISTRICT COURTS


Baxter County is in the Arkansas 14th Judicial District — which also encompasses Marion, Boone and Newton counties — and has a circuit court with four divisions and four circuit court judges.


Circuit courts are responsible for felony criminal cases, civil cases, probate, divorces, and juvenile and family cases. Bax- ter County District Court han- dles misdemeanors and small claims cases.


The courts are open to the public, except for juvenile court, where cases generally remain confidential.


Court is conducted at the Bax- ter County Court Complex, 301 E. Sixth St. in Mountain Home,

by the Prosecutor David Eth- redge. Judges Webb and Put- man preside in felony cases and misdemeanor appeals from district court.


Layton presides over domestic relations and civil cases, as well as child support enforcement cases.


Juvenile court handles all cases involving juveniles, ranging from delinquency and criminal vio- lations to parental abuse and neglect. Evans presides in most of those cases but also handles civil, domestic and probate matters.


District Court


Jason Duffy serves as District Court judge. District court is a non-jury court with county-wide jurisdiction over traffic vio- lations and cases involving misdemeanor charges.


The district court also hears small claims up to $5,000 for contract disputes, and damage to or return of personal proper- ty, and civil claims up to $25,000.


Cases in district court may be appealed to circuit court for jury trials.
