magnificent eccentric hotel, family owned and run by Nick and Frances Ryan. Nick, a founder member of Connoisseurs Scotland, has won many accolades at Crinan including Hotelier of the Year, Best Seafood Restaurant in UK, Best Gastro Pub and Seafood Bar finalist 2016 CIS Excellence Awards. The hotel dates from Victorian days when Queen Victoria traversed the Crinan Canal on a horse drawn barge. The rooms all have breathtaking views, indeed the hotel was winner of the award for ‘Best Seaview from any hotel in Europe’ from Luxury Travel Guide for 2018. Some of the rooms have balconies and are dedicated to a famous Scottish artist, owner Frances Macdonald [Ryan] and son Ross Ryan included. Crinan is a magnet for artists, musicians, food lovers and film producers. Dave Brubeck and Andrew LLoyd Webber played the piano, Rick Stein had Jumbo Prawns Corryvreckan in Lock 16 and Sean Connery 007 filmed from Russia with Love. A fishing port for 200 years Jumbo Prawns [langoustines] and lobsters are landed 5pm daily for dinner.

The Westward Restaurant, recommended by the Michelin Guide, looks west over Jura, serves a perfectly balanced five course table d’hôte menu sourcing local produce, creel caught langoustines, hill lamb and organic greens. The Seafood Bar, overlooking the fishing port, serves the catch of the day, a la carte and is relaxed. Both include choices for meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans.

Friday and Saturdays and for private parties. Sail on the Classic MV Sgarbh to the Corryvreckan whirlpool or the island of Jura where George Orwell wrote 1984. There are bespoke day charters with Lobster lunch, spotting dolphins, sea eagles and minke whales. Walk along the canal towpath, forest tracks or the Kilmartin trail and see standing stones and rhododendrons. Golfers head down the Mull of Kintyre to Macrihanish which is a stunning coastal drive or you can relax and enjoy this amazing location.
