BROUGHT TO YOU BY

The best new music coming straight outt a Norwich

tunes and be pretty open with the old emotions – yet with a British twist.

“Don’t get me wrong,” Jake told us, “I love all that Country heritage. I listen to loads and I’ve been to Nashville and it’s great. But back here I can’t write songs about big open highways and just wanted to create something more real to me.” Listen to the words of Englishman and you get it all in one go.

Jake Morrell

Jake Morrell has been making music in Norfolk since his late teens. Bit by bit, song by song he’s been gaining audiences both locally and across the UK. He may have started by playing upbeat acoustic, but over the last year the mood has swung towards Country. With a new EP called Englishman just released, along with a single of the same name and a series of cool videos, it’s a good time to check out what’s been happening to our Jake of late.

Of course Country is all the rage. Been popular for years of course but the problem locally is that acts mostly favoured the flavour of the USA scene. The emergence of New Country shows there’s a different breed coming through and Jake is definitely amongst that group. Acts who love what Country has to offer - the ability to tell stories about life, write good

From his last set of songs till now Jake has taken a break from releasing tracks. Bit by bit he’s been piecing together his new sound, forming a band to play it live too. It’s interesting to see with the latest EP an artist inching their way musically to where they want to be. First up it needs to be said the songs are all strong but if you were expecting Country or you thought Jake was still acoustic, you are in for a surprise. He has a new blend, a new genre almost. Jake is pretty excited about what he’s making right now and the acid test was to try them out in front of a hardened audience of Country fans from here and the USA at the recent C2C: Country to Country Festival in London. Their verdict? “They liked them!” he told us.

If you want to check out Jake Morrell’s new EP Englishman and watch the videos to go along with them – catch them on YouTube or Facebook. Jake promises he will be back playing in the county very soon.

Pretty Ace

It’s always exciting to come across new talent and Pretty Ace are certainly that. Four sisters from Emneth out on the county border with an exciting fresh indie Pop sound. Keira, 14 on drums, Montana, 16 the bassist, Tyeshia, 17 singer and guitarist and finally Martine, 19 on lead guitar. The girls have been making music together for 5 years, when Keira was just 9, and haven’t stopped since.

They may be young but they have already played some of the area’s big venues like The Fiver at the Cambridge Junction. That’s a dedicated night for new young bands and by all accounts they blasted out a great set. In the City they have played The Owl Sanctuary and a Sonic Youths’ session at the Norwich Arts Centre.

So far so good with the live stuff, now on to releases and Pretty Ace have scored highly here too. They have just released their debut EP Here and Now, recorded at Grange Farm studios near

their home village. I Wanna Be Your Lover, Someday and Lights In The City all found their way onto our show as quick as they were sent to us and Alright Mama was chosen to play out on Radio Norfolk’s Stephen Bumfrey show as our Record of The Week. That’s some mileage for a new act.

With the band being four sisters you can guess there’s a lot of family support behind them. Dad’s building them a music room in the garage to practise. And if you think you can hear a bit of The Vaccines in them, that will be from their Uncle who apparently plays them all the time!

They tell us that the best is yet to come and promise newly penned song Kiss Me is their strongest yet. You can judge for yourself by catching them live in Norwich on our BBC Music Introducing in Norfolk stage as part of the Lord Mayor’s Weekend. If you can’t wait till then, grab a copy of the new EP

Pretty Ace: Here And Now EP available now on iTunes, Spotify, and Soundcloud. Upcoming gigs: Saturday 7th July Bandstand stage, Chapelfield Gardens, Norwich.
