LIVELINE

British Summer Time arrives, and with it the start of barbecue and festival season, a time for burning your sausage on the beach, swigging Pinot Grigio in the park, and sleeping in someone else’s tent by mistake. And indoors there are plenty of top gigs over the next two months (just in case it rains).

APRIL

If you prefer to escape both the April Fools and the Easter Bunny then head to Te Owl Sanctuary on the 1st for their Waster Sunday, an all-day resurrection of punk, ska and acoustic acts presented by Millie Manders and Te Shutup. It doesn’t start until 2pm, so plenty of time to pre-load with Cadburys Creme Eggs before you go.

If you weren’t already going to Norwich Arts Centre on the 2nd to see New York’s Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts, then you will surely want to once you learn that support is from local sensation Gladboy.

Embrace are at Epic Studios on the 4th. Big hugs on Magdalen Street for all you good good people.

Eeny, meeny, miney, MØ. Catch her at Nick Rayns LCR on the 5th.

Britpop favourites Sleeper arrive at Norwich Arts Centre on the 7th, two decades after Sale of Te Century reached number 10 in the singles charts. Nicholas Parsons is on the guest list.

It is time to Party Hard. Andrew WK gatecrashes Te Waterfront on the 18th with a new album, seventeen years after getting wet, having a nosebleed, and partying ‘til he puked. Make sure you have some clean-up wipes in your bag.

THE BEST LIVE MUSIC FOR THE MONTHS AHEAD

Cinema City host a sing-a-long screening of Grease on the 19th to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film’s original release. It’s not strictly live music, but ‘Uh well-a well-a well-a huh...’

He sang on Te Zombies’ She’s Not Tere in 1964. He had solo hits in the 70’s with Say You Don’t Mind and I Don’t Believe in Miracles, and he’s still singing now. Catch Colin Blunstone at Epic Studios on the 22nd.

Baxter Dury released Prince of Tears last year, his best album to date. He visits Norwich Arts Centre on the 23rd. Support comes from the wonderful Bessie Turner.

Ruby Turner appears at Norwich Playhouse on the 28th. She has sung with everybody from Mick Jagger to Bryan Ferry in a career spanning over thirty years. Now she is in Norwich to sing for you.

MAY

Marmozets (with a z) are an English rock band from Bingley, West Yorkshire. Marmosets (with an s) are small monkeys that live high up in the canopies of South American rainforests. Only the former will be appearing at Te Waterfront on the 4th.

Wilko Johnson (formerly of Dr Feelgood) and Hugh Cornwell (formerly of Te Stranglers) appear with their respective bands at the Nick Rayns LCR on the 5th. Two legends of the 70’s pub rock scene, each getting a round in.

Be back at the Nick Rayns LCR on the 9th for Frank Turner & Te Sleeping Souls. And remember to Be More Kind.

Norfolk and Norwich Festival kicks off on the 11th and continues through until the 27th. Musical highlights include Deva Mahal (daughter of legendary blues musician Taj Mahal) at Norwich

Playhouse on the 17th; Dresden Doll Amanda Palmer at Open on the 20th; and jazz/Afro-beat fusion band Maisha in the Adnams Spiegeltent on the 26th. Check the Festival website, or pick up a brochure for full programme details.

A whole hod load of local acts come together at Te Brickmakers on the 12th for PBL Fest, in aid of Priscilla Bacon Hospice. Buy a ticket for the day, the evening, or both. Confirmed so far include Ducking Punches, Collapse Te Sky and Te Wolf Number, as well as comedians Kyle Stewart and Jamie Seaman.

90’s favourites Te Bluetones visit Epic Studios on the 20th. Hounslow’s finest began by Expecting To Fly, and remain airborne to this day.

Get yourselves ready for two outdoor events in Earlham Park at the tail end of the month, starting with a retro line-up on the 26th which includes Te Human League and OMD. Sunday Sessions follow on the 27th, starring Kaiser Chiefs, Tom Odell and British Sea Power. Go to both days, and you’ll never miss a beat.

Fans of Te Moody Blues will be arriving at the Teatre Royal on the night of the 28th for a solo concert from singer Justin Hayward. Remember to wear white satin.

And finally, former Easyworld front- man David Ford brings his Animal Spirits tour to Open on the 30th. A full range of mixers will be available.

Next, stand by for a flaming June and a glorious summer of festivals and outdoor partying. I’ll meet you by the bag search, where we can compare wristbands, and attempt to smuggle our spirits through in factor 30 sunscreen bottles.
