QUIRKY KENT – HIDDEN GEMS 045 A fi rst for Turner Contemporary & T The Canterbury Auction Galleries
In the fi rst of what is hoped to be a series of collaborations, Canterbury Auction Galleries is hosting an Antique Valuation Day at Turner Contemporary as Managing Director Tony Pratt explains
ony Pratt, Managing Director of The Canterbury Auction Galleries, and fellow Directors Cliona Kilroy and David Parker are delighted to announce that
they have further developed an on-going relationship and sponsorship with Turner Contemporary, Margate. As members of a fl edgling business
circle formed two years ago, this opened our eyes to the great work done by Turner Contemporary to encourage all to see, think and learn differently about art and to make this available for all to enjoy, which has made the Turner such a huge success since it opened seven years ago on 16th April 2011.
This year Canterbury Auction Galleries
are proud to be the main sponsor of Turner Contemporary’s major spring exhibition – Journeys with The Waste Land – that explores the signifi cance of T.S. Eliot’s poem The Waste Lands through visual arts. The poem was actually written in Margate when T.S. Eliot spent a few weeks in the seaside town in 1921 at a crucial moment in his career. He arrived in a fragile state, both physically and mentally, and worked on The Waste Land sitting in the Nayland shelter overlooking Margate Sands. The poem was published the
following year and proved to be a pivotal and infl uential modernist work, refl ecting on the fractured world in the aftermath of the First World War as well as T.S. Eliot’s own personal crisis. The exhibition presents the work of
more than 60 artists, including works by Paul Nash, J.M.W. Turner, Patrick Heron, Paula Rego, Edward Hopper and Henry Moore, and explores how contemporary and historical art can enable us to refl ect on the poems shifting fl ow of diverse voices, references, characters and places.
Antique Valuation Day
THIS OPENED OUR EYES TO THE GREAT WORK DONE BY THE TURNER TO ENCOURAGE ALL
TO SEE, THINK AND LEARN DIFFERENTLY ABOUT ART
The exhibition is a culmination of a
three-year project designed to develop a pioneering approach to curating. It has been lead by Professor Mike Tooby from Cardiff and Dr Trish Scott from Turner Contemporary, along with more than 30 local people coming together as The Waste Land Research Group, who have worked tirelessly to bring together every aspect of the exhibition, which runs until 7th May and is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am-5pm.
The Canterbury Auction Galleries are proud to be holding an Antique Valuation Day on Wednesday 25th April from 10am-3pm. This is a fi rst for Turner Contemporary and it is hoped that the residents of East Kent will bring out their treasures for our specialists to assess and value for a possible sale by auction. This will be very much in the vein of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and it is hoped that this will bring a different range of visitors to Turner Contemporary. This will be followed by an informative
and amusing public talk, An Introduction to Buying and Selling at Auction, given by our own David Parker, which will give pointers as to how to obtain the best price at auction and even a few tips on how the whole process works and can be enjoyed. This will be held in the Foyle Room from 5pm-7pm and entry is free.
