FOOD & DRINK 021

A taste of Turkey Kentish seaside

by the Catherine Sherwood H

aving enjoyed previous visits to A La Turka in Canterbury we were looking forward to a trip to the restaurant in Herne

Bay – and were not disappointed. It is in a great location right on the seafront with plenty of parking nearby. Despite it being a cold, dark midweek evening the restaurant was bustling and it is clearly a popular place to dine for couples and families, with one group enjoying a lively birthday party. On entering, you cannot fail to notice the massive ornate coloured lights over the tables that create a warm and exotic atmosphere. The menu is extensive and remembering the large portions at Canterbury we were cautious not too over-order our starters, selecting a couple of tasty dishes from the mezes selection: the fresh Cacik (cucumber and yoghurt) with the delicious courgette fritters – Mucver. Starters arrived with a generous basket of warm Turkish flatbreads

and a big bowl of salad. The mixed hot and cold meze selections would be good choice for a larger party.

The main courses are divided into Kebabs, Seafood, Vegetarian and Specials and there is a large selection to choose from. We opted for the vegetarian kebabs (grilled vegetables with rice and special sauce) and the Adana with yoghurt, which is a spicy minced lamb dish. Both dishes were generous portions and

the waitress kindly offered to box up my leftovers to take home with me. We finished our meal with a taste of

the rose-infused Sutlaci rice pudding and their speciality of the sweet, sticky delight of Baklava, which contains pistachios sourced

from the owners’ home town of Gaziantep. The Turkish Efes beer and mint Turkish tea selected from the extensive drinks menu complemented the courses well. The restaurant prides itself on sourcing local meat and fish and importing authentic herbs and spices from Turkey, then preparing the dishes by cooking over wood charcoal. This all adds to the quality and flavour of the cuisine. A La Turka in Herne Bay is highly

recommended for anyone wanting to experience a little taste of Turkey by the Kentish seaside. • A La Turka, 61 Central Parade, Herne Bay CT6 5JG, call 01227 370707 or visit www. ala-turka.co.uk/herne-bay.php
