Major sea defence scheme gets a green light
A successful government funding bid for £2.8 million will enable a key sea defence scheme to begin in Herne Bay this autumn. The scheme is to include 24 new timber beach groynes – 13 at the King’s Hall and 11 at Lane End. According to Canterbury City Council, the existing structures were built in 1963 and 1972 respectively and are now at the end of their design life, meaning they cannot provide sufficient protection to the sea wall.
The work also includes a small section of Dine with the city’s mayor
Residents from the city and surrounding area are being invited to the Lord Mayor of Canterbury’s Dinner Dance being held on Friday 20th April. The annual dinner dance – sponsored by Designed Interiors – will be held at the Winters Barns venue in Canterbury from 7pm-12am. The night will start with a reception and complimentary glass of
fizz before a three-course meal. After that there will be a silent auction and raffle, with the proceeds going to the Lady Mayoress’ Charity. The evening will end with a chance to dance the night away. This year’s causes are Pilgrims Hospices and homelessness organisation Porchlight. The ticket price is £70, which includes the meal with half a bottle of wine per person followed by coffee and mints. • Tickets are available on 01227 862080 or via

rock protection between the King’s Hall Pumping Station and Herne Bay Sailing Club, seawall and promenade repairs, handrail refurbishment and beach recycling.
The timber for the groynes, Greenheart, will
be Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) approved and sourced from Guyana where it is native. Greenheart is one of the strongest commercially available timbers and is ideally suited for marine construction where resistance to marine borers, strength and long life is required.
Subject to planning permission and a Marine Management Organisation licence, work on site in Herne Bay will start in September and run until spring 2019, minimising disruption in the busy summer period.
ICE to work with Canterbury Bike Ride 2018
Iconic Cycling Events (ICE), the specialist cycling division of Breathing Space Activities Ltd, has joined forces with The Canterbury Bike Ride in 2018 as the popular annual event goes from strength to strength. ICE has been organising a number of large scale cycling events in historic cities around the UK, including Bike Oxford, Bike Chester and Bike Bath, and will bring some of its experience to the Kent ride this autumn. The annual Canterbury Bike Ride, celebrating its fifth year, takes place on Sunday 23rd September when riders will have the opportunity to take part in the 80, 50 or 25-mile routes through the striking Kent countryside. Food stops along the
route will supply some of the best produce the region has to offer.
Individuals and teams will start and finish at Canterbury Rugby Club where they can enjoy a relaxing beer after putting in the miles. Last year’s ride surpassed all fundraising targets and raised £7,500 shared between Wheelchair Rugby, Kent MS Therapy Centre and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. This year’s event organisers are aiming
to attract more than 600 riders and will be supported by a number of local businesses including The Canterbury INDEX Magazine, Barretts of Canterbury, Lenleys, Sally Hatcher Estates and Dynamix. • For more information, visit www.
