REVIEW:HYUNDAI KONA BY SUE COOKE

Corporate fleets are leading the exodus away from diesel according to new research. Sewells Research & Insight’s twice-yearly Market Barometer has found that 71% of fleets currently operate diesel cars, but only 59% expect their replacement cars to be fueled by diesel. Petrol cars will take up most of the slack in the short-term, although by far the most dynamic growth will be in sales of hybrid and electric cars. And manufacturers are responding by introducing a

greater choice. Hyundai will be the first carmaker in Europe to merge eco-mobility and SUV style when it launches the all new Kona Electric at the Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of March. Hyundai already has the highly rated IONIQ Electric

on the market which is the only car available with three different electrified powertrains in one body type. But the new KONA Electric will fulfill the market growth for compact SUVs as well. I road tested the petrol version of the KONA this week which has powerful performance when needed and is a practical sports utility vehicle, with just about every feature to suit every driving need. Prices start from £16,195 and even the S trim level includes air conditioning, LED daytime running lamps, automatic headlamps, standard cruise control, electric front and rear windows and DAB and Bluetooth connectivity. There are even steering wheel controls for audio, telephone and cruise control. Move up the range and the list gets longer. But what is beneficial to the finances is that there are no extras, which can suddenly bump up the price.

A choice of exterior colours are designed to stand

out from the crowd. My road test car arrived in Tangerine Comet which was extremely easy to spot in a car park. I found that the interior is spacious and comfortable for long journeys with a useful amount of storage for every type of clutter. Hyundai has long been a pioneer in the SUV market

with the Tucson and Santa Fe and the KONA has an all- wheel drive version for those who favour the occasional off-road adventure or just want to get home safely on muddy, slippery or flooded roads. Other useful equipment further up the range from

£21,195 include heated steering wheel and front parking sensors. New for KONA, the Premium SE introduces the Head Up Display. I think all cars should have this feature as it projects relevant information directly to the driver’s line of sight. The HUD is displayed onto an 8” screen, which lowers into the dashboard when not in use. All KONA models come with Hyundai’s industry

leading 5 Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty, 5 Year Roadside Assistance package, 5 Year Annual Health Check, and 12 Year Anti Corrosion Warranty. The Market Barometer suggests that as many as

30% of fleets expect to run hybrid cars within the next 12 months, and a further seven per cent will have pure electric cars on their books by the end of the year. This represents a dramatic increase from the 12% of fleets that currently have at least one hybrid car, and the three per cent of fleets which have a battery-powered car - but then, there is so much more choice now.
