Purpol Marketing takes home the prize

Denise O’Leary joined inspirational businesses, charities and individuals from across the South West on 18 January to celebrate the South West Business and Community Awards, and took home the prestigious title of Business of the Year 2018. This is the first year that the

South West Business and Community Awards have run, and the event was a huge success, organised by Alec Jones-Hall and Allison Dodd. The awards aimed to recognise businesses, charities and individuals that have made an outstanding contribution within the region, and included charities and businesses focused on helping the disadvantaged to succeed within the work place; individuals who have dedicated their careers to educating young people and businesses such as Purpol Marketing who are committed to providing real life business environment learning to interns. Those shortlisted and their

guests gathered at the Double Tree Hilton, Swindon, having been selected from well over 300 entrants, with the judges including: entrepreneur James Phipps, Julianne Ponan, CEO of Creative Nature and The Guardian’s Business Leader of the Year, and award winner and author Michelle Mills-Porter. The event was hosted by Alison Edgar, ‘the Entrepreneur’s Godmother’.The

IN BRIEF

Bristol will be one of the first cities to benefit from proposals announced today by Openreach for a major acceleration of its ultrafast fibre broadband network. Openreach, Britain’s

national broadband infrastructure provider, has announced proposals to extend by 50 per cent its target for rolling out Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) to reach three million premises across the UK by the end of 2020 through a new ‘Fibre First’ programme. It is expected that tens of thousands of Bristol homes and businesses will benefit from this latest multi million pound expansion. Further details of the roll-out in the city are expected to be announced later in the year. Clive Selley, chief executive

Business of the Year Award is a significant win for Denise, who started Purpol Marketing in 2014 in order to help companies, SME’s in particular, leverage marketing expertise and win £100m+ projects. Purpol brings over 30 years’ of experience and insight to their clients and Denise has grown her self-funded start-up to a successful business that now employs five people and is constantly expanding and developing, including the provision of seven internships and four work placements.

Denise said: “It is an absolute

honour to have won, especially when every shortlisted nominee was worthy of consideration. We are so passionate about helping SME’s develop their marketing and pitch for projects, so to have the hard work of the team recognised is amazing! “In particular, our commitment

to providing valuable internships and work placements for university and college students was commended by the judges and is something I am very proud to be able to offer.”

College rises to challenge

Weston College has set an ambitious target of achieving 200 apprenticeship pledges in just 100 days. Following the success of the

previous 100 in 100 campaign, the college have decided to raise the bar by matching 200 apprentices with local employers in 100 days. The campaign began on 22 January, and will run through until 8 June. Throughout the campaign, the college will be updating their progress via social media, using the hashtag #200in100 on Twitter. Dr Paul Phillips CBE, principal and chief executive of

the Weston College Group, said: “One of the most effective ways of bringing a new generation of employees to your company is through apprenticeships. Apprenticeships have expanded over the years, and we have seen the growth in popularity of our degree apprenticeships, giving organisations a hands-on approach in the development of the student, to meet their business needs.

“Weston College are excited to

be launching this campaign to create 200 apprenticeships in 100 days. With the support of existing and new employer partners from across the region, we look forward to supplying more opportunities to our students in the year ahead. “We’re appealing to

organisations across the region to pledge and support this exciting mission to create 200 local jobs.” The businesses that pledge will have their logos featured in the dedicated ‘200 in 100’ section of the website, be featured predominantly in the social media campaign and have other publicity through press releases and video.

of Openreach, said: “Through the Fibre First programme, Openreach is getting on with the job of building an Ultrafast Britain. We are accelerating our plans to build FTTP to three million premises by 2020 which sets the course to reach ten million by the mid-2020s with the right conditions.”
