Are we solely humanitarians or followers of Christ? Are we trying to minister to the body and the mind only, or are we trying to save souls? Are we coming from the viewpoint of secular humanism, or are we coming from the heart of Christ? The parables of Jesus make it clear that well-fed, well- clothed, well-provisioned people can go to hell if they neglect so great a salvation.

Many of India’s leaders were educated in Christian schools but are still Hindus. Why? Indians are very family-oriented, and most are

going to follow the religion of their parents. If money and good works alone would do it, India would have been converted three times over by now.

Most people become followers of Christ due to contact with a Christian whose life and example has directly touched and impacted them. In 1 Corinthians 4:15-16, Paul said:

“For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Wherefore I beseech you, be you followers of me.”

That’s the key: Fathers and followers. At World Missionary Evangelism we see orphanages and children’s homes as an instrument for a saving Gospel that provides children with loving parents in Christ, as well as a family of brothers and sisters in a larger Christian community.

This doesn’t mean we won’t have a prodigal or two. But it does mean when the prodigal comes home, there will be a loving parent and family waiting. There will be a light in the window, and that light will be the Light of the World. For WME and its Native Missionaries who serve needy children, we are not going to put the Light of Life under a bushel. We will put it where it can give Light that all men may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.
