32/ JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018 THE RIDER Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada News

AHAEC Hall Of Fame Inductees

Frank & Norma Marlow And The Marlow Family One of the founding

members of the Unionville Arabian Horse Club prior to its

assimilation with

AHAEC. For nearly half a century the Marlow Family was an integral part of AHAEC, as they were own- ers, breeders, competitors, Youth supporters & promot- ers. Generations of the Mar- low Family competed, daughters Cindy & Car- olynn trained a number of

& Side Saddle horse with Donna astride. He sired many notable Arabians & Half-Arabians, known for their tractability & athletic ability.

SANMAN This bay stallion born

Cynthia won the first ever Show Hack class at US Nation- als. Jonathan is now a professional trainer in California (third generation Marlow to be involved with Arabians!)

Marlow-bred horses to Na- tional honours as well as those of many local clients. Family members held vari- ous positions in AHAEC, be it as Director or Canadian National Royal Red Arabian Championship Committee member when the show was held in Toronto. They most influenced the youth mem- bers,

regularly hosting

Youth Camps, Youth Re- treats, training & coaching our young enthusiasts in be- coming not only better horsemen & horsewomen, but also to be better people & scholars through a consci- entious work ethic & re- sponsibility. Many of our amateurs today have been influenced by the Mar- lows—the knowledge they imparted, the great environ- ment they created for people to learn & for horses to thrive, the robust personality that was distinctly “Mar- low” and their committed passion for the Arabian breed & those who were part of it.

ANEEYNA No one can forget this

grey Half-Arabian mare with her flamboyant gait as she competed in Park and Native Costume ridden by owner Carolyn Dinsmore deBoer. Accumulating mul- tiple championships at our club shows, Regionals & nationals, this pair was strik- ing! After Aneeyna’s show career she became a brood- mare at Tagalong Stables and produced the next gen- eration of worthy Half-Ara- bians.

MAGISEYN During the early years

of the Arabian horse indus- try here in Ontario & AHAEC, horses were versa- tile and competed in any number of disciplines. This grey stallion foaled in 1966 was owned throughout his life by Donna Fortin of Stouffville. He was of revered British lines through his sire Touch of Magic, with Naseem & Skowronek listed prominently in his pedigree, as is Fadl and Ferseyn. Magiseyn was a keen competitor in halter & performance, but pictur- esque as an English Pleasure

in 1972 was more like a family member than a barn mate to Harold VanDyke. They were inseparable not only on their small acreage in Gormley, but in the showring, on the competi- tive driving tracts, the dis- tance riding trails and promoting the breed to the public as on many occasions Harold would drive Sanman in the wedding carriage for local brides & grooms. A *Naborr grandson on the topside and Witez II great grandson on the maternal side proved a great combi- nation as Sanman was the epitome of the versatile Ara- bian, accomplishing cham- pionships in all disciplines by Harold and in the open Arabian classes with Gord McKay & Jill Barton. He left a legacy of offspring, as they also became multi-dis- ciplined mounts in the showring, over fences and on the trails. Sanman “bred on” athletic ability, versatil- ity & quiet dispositions— the attributes the Arabian breed is noted for.

SIR ROYAL BEY MON- TANNA May be that “one in a

lifetime horse” for owner Michelle Harbridge! This exquisite grey Arabian geld- ing has proven himself over & over again in many show divisions. Who can forget his National wins in Arabian Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse, plus his many halter wins, side saddle and hunter pleasure in open & amateur. Now he is the mount of choice in the third genera- tion of the Denne/Currie dy- nasty, Matthew Harbridge

competes with him in the Youth and Junior

Somebeachsomewhere Passes Trot Insider has received con-

firmation that Somebeachsome- where p,3,1:46.4 ($3,328,755), the superstar Standardbred both on the racetrack and in the breeding shed, has passed away at the age of 13. A few hours after confirming

Beach’s passing with Trot Insider, the Somebeachsomewhere Syndi- cate announced that he had been humanely euthanized at Mid-At- lantic Veterinary Center in Ringoes, New Jersey at roughly 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 14. The syndicate also announced that Somebeachsome- where will be laid to rest at Hanover Shoe Farms in Hanover, Pennsylvania after an autopsy is complete. Some- beachsomewhere had stood stud at Hanover since his on-track career con- cluded at the end of the 2008 racing campaign. `On November 19, 2017, Brent

MacGrath had told Trot Insider that ‘Beach’ had a small cancerous mass – a large cell lymphoma – removed and had begun a six-week round of chemotherapy. The mass, which was roughly

half the size of a grape, was discov- ered after Hanover Shoes Farms’ farm manager, Dr. Bridgette Jablonsky, elected to send the superstar son of Mach Three to an equine hospital. Beach, who had dealt with colic and

some stomach issues in the past, had been suffering from some discomfort. After having located the part of Beach’s intestine that was causing the issue, the small mass was then de- tected. Somebeachsomewhere, who had

the mass removed earlier in Novem- ber, had commenced chemotherapy on Saturday, November 18. Beach’s treat- ment had been overseen by internal medicine specialist Dr. Rodney Bel- grave of the Mid-Atlantic Veterinary Center. Three biopsies of the mass had been conducted, one of which came back as positive for cancer. Driven by Paul MacDonell and

campaigned by Brent MacGrath for the Nova Scotia-based Schooner Sta- ble, world champion Somebeach- somewhere won 20 of his 21 races during his legendary career and earned

$3,328,755 in purses. His major victories as a freshman included the Battle of Waterloo, Metro Pace, Champlain Stakes and Nas- sagaweya. At three, his highlights included the Burlington (which was later renamed the Somebeach- somewhere Stakes), Pepsi North America Cup, Confederation Cup, Simcoe, Bluegrass, Tattersalls, Messenger, Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final and Breeders Crown. The two-time Canadian Horse of

the Year was inducted into the Cana- dian Horse Racing Hall of Fame nine months after he retired – at the time holding eight world records. Some- beachsomewhere went on to stand stud at Hanover Shoe Farms. His off- spring earned more than $87 million and he was the first sire in harness rac- ing history to top $20 million in prog- eny earnings in a single season. Among his offspring are 13 million- aires, including Captaintreacherous ($3.15 million), Pure Country ($2.41 million), Downbytheseaside ($2.28 million), Huntsville ($1.8 million) and Check Six ($1.61 million). Please join Standardbred Canada

in offering condolences to the connec- tions of Somebeachsomewhere. Story courtesy of Standardbred Canada
