and different ways to extinguish fires. Students toured the Station, explored the trucks, watched firemen go down the pole, and everyone got the opportunity to put out a fire!
JUNE
Hailey Moss ‘23 reached the under-13 girls semi-final at the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships in Guyana.
Rosemary Swain ‘17 was honoured in June at the Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda [HAB] Awards Ceremony for her dedicated service as a Candy Striper over the past four years. Rosemary dedicated more than 360 hours of
community service and was awarded with a $3,000 scholarship to help with her Nursing Degree programme, at Keele University in the UK, which she began this Fall.
On June 23rd, Year 6 students celebrated their Primary Leaving Ceremony and displayed their drama talents by performing “The Grunch”, a funny and charming play.
Laura Hupman ‘23 was selected to represent Bermuda at the North American Optimist Championship, in Toronto.
Enterprise Day saw Year 9 students come up with business ideas, produce marketing and
branding plans, and then sell their products for profit. Bath bombs, lemonade, pancakes and tacos made up some of the stalls to the delight of students and staff.
BHS girls got an inside look at the Bermuda general election when they were invited by the Royal Gazette to participate in Election 2017 coverage. Recent graduate, and “soon to be journalism student” Ava Mayer ‘17, alumna Morgan Beckles ‘13 and Calvina Steede ‘19 took the opportunity to speak to the candidates and experience the life of a journalist, on election day.
BHS at the America’s Cup
Many members of the BHS staff were involved in the 35th America’s Cup in a volunteer capacity: Addy Osset ‘87 was a Guest Services Ambassador, Celeste Tenorio and Louise Neame were First Mates Support team members and Frances Cook was part of the On -Water Operations team. Hayley Teretta and Rachel Jenkins were America’s Cup Endeavour Kids Zone Assistants, Julie Gunther ‘88 was TV Operations - Edit/Transcriber Accreditation Team Member, Paula Harrison was a Guest Services Ambassador and Rachel Swinburne was an Event Operations Assistant.
Esme Frith ‘24, Ava Adams ‘23, Skye Oliveira ‘21, Lara Backeberg ‘22 and Genevieve Lau ‘21 participated in the America’s Cup Blokart Regatta.
Laura Hupman ‘23 and Millie Lewis ‘23 tied for first place in the National RS Feva Championships, and were the top female team. This qualified them for the RS Feva America’s Cup “Half-time” Regatta, against 12 other countries, in June.
Year 7 and 8 students had the opportunity to visit the America’s Cup Endeavour Education Station in the Event Village where they took part in many hands-on activities and exhibits that focused on the four pillars of Science, Technology, Sustainability, and Health and Nutrition.
Year 10 students made their way to Caroline Bay at Morgan’s Point during the America’s Cup to visit the Race for Water Foundation vessel, “The Odyssey”. The boat is 100% powered by alternative energy and is on a five-year mission, sailing around the world, to conduct research on ocean health, promote alternative energy innovations and raise awareness on plastic pollution in the ocean. “The Odyssey” has a five- person crew, three of whom are female mechanical engineers.
