The Torch Ceremony April 20th marked an important day
on the BHS calendar as BHS honoured its history and celebrated alumni at the 80th Torch Ceremony. The very first Torch Ceremony took place in 1937, and about 220 students participated. The original Torch was simply a tin can with a rag soaked in kerosene, nailed on to the end of a broom stick. While the Torch has been modernised, other aspects of the Ceremony remain the same as 80 years ago - everyone stands in silence and touches the Torch with their right hand. After the Torch has been passed along the whole circle, the poem The Torchbearers by Alfred Noyes is read and then everyone sings the School Song before filing out in order.
