gyms have opened. While this strong competition has been a challenge, it is also very cool that many of the own- ers have told me that I was the reason they opened their businesses. About 18 months ago, I made some

big changes: we expanded to a larger space, more than doubling our size; I turned over the entire staff in four months; and I completely changed the way I go about paying my staff. I decid- ed to pay staff members a salary rather than an hourly wage. The result is that they feel much more secure. In turn, they pass on this feeling of being com- fortable to our clients. The result of these changes is that

the business is much more sound and the staffing has remained consistent. Both our membership numbers and number of personal training clients have doubled, and our sports dryland training classes have exploded. It has taken many years, a lot of

staffing changes and an expansion of our space to finally figure out how to best serve both our clients and staff members. All of these changes have allowed the business to flourish and grow. FBC
