Eating a balanced diet that gives you the nutrients your body needs is a must if you want to boost your health and wellbeing. Here’s how to eat well to stay well


A healthy balanced diet is the foundation of a healthy life. But how can you make sure your diet is as healthy as it should be? The government's Eatwell Guide – which you can find on


gov.co.uk – is a great place to start. This shows you how to get a balance of healthier and more sustainable food, and how much of what you eat overall should come from each food group.


Fruit and veg You should aim to eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day, the guide advises. Fruit and veg are a good source of vitamins, minerals and fibre, and you don’t have to just eat them fresh – frozen, tinned, dried or juiced versions all count too.


Starchy carbs Try to base your meals on foods such as potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.


These foods are a good source of energy and the main source of a range of nutrients in your diet. Choose wholegrain or higher fibre versions with less added fat, sugar and salt.


Protein foods You should also eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, lean meat and other foods that contain protein (they also contain vitamins and minerals). Beans, peas and lentils are good meat alternatives because they’re lower in fat and higher in fibre and protein.


Dairy foods Also have some dairy or dairy alternatives (eg soya drinks and yoghurts). Not only are they good sources of protein

and some vitamins, these foods are also an important source of calcium, which you need for strong bones. Choose lower fat and lower sugar options where possible.


Other foods Healthy fats – such as vegetable, rapeseed, olive and sunflower oils – should be eaten in small amounts, as should foods high in fat, salt and sugar, which you should eat less often.

How to stay hydrated The Eatwell Guide also recommends drinking plenty of fluids – the government recommends six to eight cups or glasses a day (water is ideal). Also remember that alcohol is a diuretic, which


means it makes your kidneys remove extra water from your system, leaving you dehydrated. This can have a noticeable effect on your skin. So when you’re having a night out, match each alcoholic drink with a glass of water to maintain the balance. Monitor changes in your hydration level by


checking the colour of your urine (it should be a pale straw colour – if it’s any darker, it means you need to drink more).
