Getting older doesn’t mean you can’t stay as fit and well as you were in your 20s and 30s. Here are some of the things you can do to age healthily


When you reach the age of 40, it’s undoubtedly one of the times in your life to take stock and re-evaluate what’s important – including your wellbeing. And that could mean deciding to develop new habits to make sure you stay healthy, not just in your 40s but also in the decades to come. Here are some of the things you may want to consider doing when you hit the big 4 -0…


Look after your heart There are lots of things you can do to boost your heart health. Your diet, for instance, can make a big difference, so try to eat less salt, cut back on sugar, keep saturated fat to a minimum and eat more oily fish. And don’t forget to eat at least five portions of fruit and veg every day. Your heart will also thank you if you stay active and keep your weight as healthy as possible.


Give up smoking If you’re a smoker, quitting is the best thing you can do to improve your health. According to the Smokefree campaign, you’re four times more likely to quit with NHS help. Manage stress Stress is linked to ill health so it’s important to manage it whenever you feel the pressure is getting to you. Staying active is one way to reduce stress, since your body releases mood-boosting chemicals called endorphins when you exercise.

Lower your chances of developing dementia Many people fear developing dementia as they get older. But a healthy lifestyle during your 40s, 50s and beyond may help reduce your risk. This means taking regular exercise, keeping your weight at a healthy level, not smoking and only drinking alcohol in moderation.


Reduce your diabetes risk Several things can increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes as you get older, including being overweight or having high blood pressure. But even if you’re at risk it’s not too late to reduce the odds of developing it. Start by eating healthily and staying as active as possible to keep your weight in check.


NHS Health Check at LloydsPharmacy Once you’ve reached the age of 40 you may be eligible for a free NHS-funded Health Check once every five years until you’re 74. This health check-up is designed to spot the early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and dementia – all of which you have a higher risk of developing as you get older.
