glOOmy NEwS ON SmOkINg CESSATION fRONT

The latest statistics on NI’s smoking cessation services for 2016/17 have been published - and show a decline in the number of people accessing the services on the previous year.

The tables provide four-week follow-up information on people reporting to smoking cessation services during the year 2016/17, in addition to figures for the 52- week follow up of people who signed up to the programme in 2015/16.

The statistics reveal that a total of 18,637 people set a quit date through the smoking cessation services in 2016/17: a decrease of 2,648 (twelve per cent) on the previous year.

As in previous years, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) was the most popular therapeutic intervention, with 73 per cent of those who set a quit date having used this therapy.

There was some positive news in that, at the four-week follow-up, 10,872 reported that they had successfully quit, around three- fifths (58 per cent) of those setting a quit date. The four-week success rate was 60 per cent for males and 57 per cent for females.

Increasing uptake for the smoking cessation services remains a concern for many community pharmacists. Turn to page 16 to read one award- winning pharmacist’s tips on increasing your footfall into this service.
