fIVE mINUTES wITh... Hannah Henderson kennedy’s Pharmacy,
Rasharkin and Dunloy Tell us a little about yourself... I currently live just outside Desertmartin with my parents on the family farm. In terms of hobbies, I really enjoy playing football and I am currently playing for Ballymena United ladies team.
As well as football I also enjoy, running, cycling and horse riding. when I get the chance - and am not too busy with my sporting commitments - I also enjoy travelling and getting to see as much of the world as possible.
When did you qualify? I graduated from queen’s University Belfast in july 2015. following graduation, I completed my pre-registration year at kennedy’s Pharmacy in Rasharkin and I have been a fully qualified pharmacist for just over a year now.
Career path to date? while studying pharmacy at queen’s, I was fortunate to get a Saturday job working in my local community pharmacy.
Since then, I’ve had a real passion for community pharmacy and so I decided I would like to complete my pre-registration year in a community setting. I really enjoyed my pre-registration year and the different opportunities I had to engage with the local community; from doing talks at the local primary schools to organising different health promotions in the shop and meeting with the local gPs.
when I completed my pre- registration year in july 2016, I was offered a full-time position as a pharmacist in kennedy’s Pharmacy working in both the Rasharkin and Dunloy shops and I have been here ever since.
In what sort of an environment is Kennedy’s Pharmacy located? kennedy’s Pharmacy in Rasharkin is located in a rural County Antrim village.
30 - PhARmACy IN fOCUS
It is the only pharmacy in Rasharkin and therefore plays an important role in the local community through the dispensing of prescriptions and the services that it offers, as well as the help and support it provides to local residents.
kennedy’s Pharmacy in Dunloy is found in another rural village seven miles from Rasharkin. The Dunloy pharmacy is the only healthcare service available in Dunloy, as the village doesn’t have a gP practice, so the pharmacy is often the first place residents come to for help or advice on medical or health- related queries.
This obviously means that the pharmacy has a very important role in the community it serves.
How do you think pharmacy has changed as a profession during the years that you've been practising? As I am just recently qualified, I haven’t yet noticed any huge changes in the profession. however, I have seen the introduction of the Community Pharmacy foundation Programme by NICPlD.
The programme was designed to help support recently-qualified community pharmacists develop their skills and improve their confidence. I am currently completing the community foundation programme and I was very fortunate to be one of the first community pharmacist involved in the programme.
What's next for pharmacy? The introduction of the practice- based pharmacists in the local gP surgeries will, I feel, be of great benefit. I’m looking forward to working alongside them, to help improve patient care in the community and promote pharmacy as a key member of the primary care team.
