Ninety-two-year-old Dr Suzanne Sparrow, is a Devon businesswoman of many firsts - and was a popular winner of a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Devon Chamber of Commerce Awards in 2015. She describes herself has a

‘golden entrepreneur’ and still very active in her English Language Teaching School based in Plymouth, and was the city’s first (ELT) centre that was set up in 1978. Dr Sparrow, said: “The (ELT) sector

is worth over £1.2bn to the British economy, and if you add in local investments by the English language schools, tuition, accommodations, cultural activities, employees, you are looking at over £2.4bn. “Since 1978 my school alone has

our students, and we are known world wide from Brazil to Japan. “I’m especially proud of my role

in the 1980s in the Plymouth Chamber and coordinating the city’s first ever overseas marketing bureau and drumming up foreign interest in the City of Plymouth. “The Suzanne Sparrow School,

‘We bring thousands of

students to our School every year

to learn one of our biggest exports - the English language’

brought in over £40m to the Plymouth and Devon economy and we work with suppliers, partners across the city and globe. “We bring thousands of students

to our school every year to learn one of our biggest exports - the English language. Our local host families get paid for looking after

based in North Road East, was the first ever (ELT) centre to create marketing literature in the early 1980s, to promote city language courses in France and Spain, based entirely on the Brittany Ferries sailing times.” Devon is a

prime location for (ELT) learners from across the

globe, and the sector is one of the region’s

quiet success stories, but

dark clouds are circling because of uncertainties over Brexit and student learners being counted in immigration figures, but now being reviewed by the Home Office, said Dr Sparrow. “We need the sector to be

recognised more fully by the British Government and the importance that overseas learners spend in the Devon economy every year.”
