The growth

of green businesses

Devon businesses across all sectors are increasingly adopting ingenious and sustainable ways of operating, notes Exeter communications firm, Absolute PR & Marketing. Managing director, Rachael Whitson (pictured), views the upswing in the number of businesses looking to raise awareness of their green credentials as a positive trend in the ethical practice of businesses in Devon.

Many of Absolute’s own clients are adopting an enlightened approach to safeguarding our future environment:

Devon Contract Waste Heading up the first company to introduce a zero-to- landfill commercial waste service to the south west, Devon Contract Waste managing director, Simon Almond, is on a mission to green businesses across Devon through sustainable waste management. By collecting dry mixed recycling (DMR) in a single

vehicle, Devon Contract Waste is able to process a greater percentage of waste for recycling, and eliminate the need for customers to sort waste into multiple bins. Each emptied bin produces around 3kg of CO2, so every bin removed from the process contributes to reducing harmful emissions. Devon Contract Waste’s continually improving processes mean that clients can claim Zero to Landfill status with some – such as Tavistock’s Harford Bridge Holiday Park – diverting 98% of their waste from landfill (bio waste being the only exception).

Ashwoods Lightfoot As clean tech experts, the team at Ashwoods Lightfoot recognised that even the best, clean automotive technology can be sabotaged by inefficient driving. In response, they created Lightfoot, an unobtrusive

device that delivers real-time feedback from a driver’s dashboard and has been shown to deliver an average fuel saving of 20% in fleet use. In its first consumer trial, run in Exeter, a sample of 100 drivers (including the Absolute PR team) achieved a collective CO2 reduction of more than one tonne each week. Lightfoot continues to showcase how south west start-ups are spearheading green innovation as the team leads a consortium, backed by £1.8m of Government funding, to help cut harmful air pollution through “Connected Car” technology that rewards better drivers.
