Grants Available to Income-Eligible Households B

etween 1999 and 2013, approximately 58 percent of the home- owners from seven communities in Cumberland, Hancock, and

Kennebec counties who submitted well water samples for testing at the Maine CDC’s lab received results that showed arsenic levels exceeding 10 ug/L. That was 1,873 wells out of 3,234 tested. High levels of arsenic continue to be found in well water, especially in the above-mentioned counties, but how do you know if it is in your water? And what do you do to fi x the problem, particularly if you’re of lower income?

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s well-

water.maine.gov website explains why it is important to test your water and how to do it. And if the results show arsenic levels greater than 10 ug/L, MaineHousing’s Arsenic Abatement Program offers fi nancial assistance for remediation systems to eligible, single-family homeowners whose private well water is being tested or was tested within the last 12 months. The grants are limited to homeown- ers whose income is at or below 80 percent of an area’s median income. Learn more at www.mainehousing.org.

Arsenic and Health Arsenic abatement is important to provide clean drinking water.

People who drink water with too much arsenic for many years are more likely to get cancer especially skin, bladder, and lung cancer. Pregnant women and children under 7 years are especially affected since arsenic may cause low birthweight and affect brain develop- ment in babies and young children.

It’s quick and easy to test your well water and Dunbar Water, a

division of Dead River, offers a no obligation in home consultation that includes a lab water sampling service. They have been work- ing with residents who qualify through the Maine Housing’s Arsenic Abatement Program and have been able to install water treatment systems through that program.

For more information, call Dunbar Water toll free at (866) 426-2273 or email info@mrh2o.com and let them know you heard about them through ELM-Maine!
