Editor’s Letter

It is hard to know where the year has gone with 2017 drawing rapidly to a close.

Soon the nights will be longer and the days considerably shorter – spring and summer but a distant memory.

September last year brought a late heatwave but there was no such luck for anyone dreaming of an Indian summer.

Winter is a good time to get out into the garden and carry out those jobs one is unable to get to grips with otherwise.

The apple tree needs to be pruned, a new log store built, the veg patch thoroughly weeded, fed and dug over. That dogwood. The broken fence.

The more you look, the more you find.

There are half-finished jobs here and there and others which are left because of other distractions or boredom or embarrassment.

Although I could spend my winters far more productively and usefully in the garden tending to all the above, I prefer to spend the daylight weekend hours walking.

A good ten or twelve mile walk makes me feel a lot better, helps sleeping patterns and general well-being, but other things don’t get done. Something’s got to give!

We have a great selection of articles in this edition of Mid Kent Living. Find out why former TV newsreader Jan Leeming is unlikely to remarry, learn about some great River Medway walks and find out why Canterbury is a draw this autumn and winter.

Plus there is a round-up of the best pantos in Kent. There is such a good choice this year.

But we’ll be off to see

Cinderella at the Hazlitt Theatre in December for a bit of thigh- slapping, rollicking entertainment.

All the best.
