Come conquer Canterbury!
Mid-Kent Living’s Dawn Kingsford follows in the footsteps of Romans, royalty and pilgrims to see what historic Canterbury has to offer visitors today.
Whether you enjoy heritage, culture, shopping or good food, Canterbury has it all — and all within easy walking distance. The much-loved city, which dates back
to the Iron Age, has proved difficult to ignore throughout the ages, with Romans (who stayed until 410 AD), Danes, Vikings and pilgrims invading with the same enthusiasm as today’s tourists.
It truly is a city that is blessed — with
its impressive cathedral at its heart — and hundreds of ancient buildings illustrating its colourful 2,000-year history. However, it’s a city that moves with the times, its new Marlowe theatre a case in point, the Whitefriars shopping centre and its most recent boast — a purple flag, proof of its diverse and popular night-life. So, if you’re looking for an excuse to
visit Canterbury — home to the county’s cricket ground — we’ve come up with a few reasons why you should bowl along, out of season! Autumn gets into full swing in the city, with the three-week Canterbury Festival announcing its arrival with a street parade in October. Then there’s the magic of Christmas to come, and scores of scenic streets to scour for shopping, places to eat and museums to explore.
PLACES TO VISIT
Whitefriars is home to over 60 of the UK’s most popular high street stores. Alongside, you will find smaller, independent shops offering everything from antiques and crafts to bespoke fashion and handmade jewellery. If fashion is your passion, then Whitefriars offers anchor stores such as Fenwick, Marks and Spencer, Primark and Next, as well as Zara, Hobbs, Phase Eight, River Island and H&M.
St Augustine’s Abbey (Longport) was founded shortly after 597AD and marked the rebirth of Christianity in southern England. Originally created as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent, you can now enjoy the ruins of this impressive abbey and museum. Open weekends only over the winter
