OCTOBER Canterbury Festival (October 14- November 4) — A tasty mix to satisfy appetites for music, dance and drama at venues across the city. Familiar faces will include musician Newton Faulkner, singers Imelda May and Ruby Turner, with recipe ideas from TV chef Tom Kerridge (pictured). Other


Canterbury Roman Museum (Butchery Lane) lies beneath the Longmarket shopping centre at the level of the Roman town. It features excavated objects, authentic reconstructions and the preserved remains of a Roman town house with mosaics. Open 10am- 5pm Monday-Sun


Westgate (St Peter’s Street) is the largest surviving city gate in England. Built of Kentish ragstone c1380, the iconic structure is the last of seven medieval gates serving Canterbury. Explore its rich history and spectacular views from the battlements. The museum also contains the original felons’ cells in the gaol extension. Open 10am-4pm Mon-Sun

NOVEMBER Christmas lights — The city’s


Christmas illuminations are lit between 5pm and 6.45pm on Thursday, November 16. Panto characters from The Marlowe promise to turn this spectacle into a party, with help from the breakfast crew at HeartFM.


Christmas Market — The Whitefriars Christmas Market runs from November 25 until December 24.


DECEMBER Window competition (from


Saturday, December 2) – This is always worth a peek, with 70 city stores and businesses expected to decorate their windows for Christmas in the hope of stealing this year’s prize.


Christmas at the Cathedral — A full programme of Jservices and carol concerts will be held at this magical and moving place to experience the season of goodwill. More at www.canterbury-cathedral.org


Community Carol Concert — On Christmas Eve, at 6.15pm, thousands flock to sing their favourite carols in Rose Square.


Santa’s grotto — Santa will be in residence at Whitefriars Square, so why not check-out his Neverland grotto from December 2 until Christmas Eve. Look out, too, for other Whitefriars events at www.whitefriars.eu
